Kulim’s own Abdul Rashid eager to end 2016 on a high
This weekend sees the final event for Junior Cycling Malaysia (JCM) this year after series of criteriums and road races. On 5th and 6th November 2016, riders from all over the country, representing a host of teams will be challenging each other for a podium finish to end the year on a high. One of those riders is Kulim’s very own Abdul Rashid Bin Hisham.
Born in Kuliim, Kedah, the world of competitive cycling is not foreign to the promising cyclist, who first started competing in mountain bike tournaments when he was 13. He gradually moving into the road race category when he was 14 years old. Originally into football, Abdul Rashid, 16, moved in competitive cycling after participating in a cycling tournament and found that he was comfortable in it, giving a good performance. He finished first in the junior category at the Singapore Mountain Bike Challenge.
“I did not pursue football because the competition is so high. You have to compete against 11 people in your team to get noticed whereas in cycling it’s just you,” he quoted. He added, “I tried cycling and saw that I could do it so my father advised me that if I was to pursue it, I have to give it my all and that’s what I am doing”.
His mother who was convinced by his determination, gave him the first road bicycle. He started out riding for a team called “Geng Budak Hitam”, under Puan Nizah, who sorted out his bicycles, lodging, allowance and until today, he still is attached to the team.
Considered as one of the top contenders for JCM Terengganu, Abdul Rashid will be racing in the Under-17 category and eager to end the year on a good note by putting in a strong performance. He currently rides for the Pelapis team (National Sports Council Development squad) and finished Top 10 at JCM Serdang and notched second place in the King of Criterium Under-17 event at JCM Putrajaya. He considers Malaysian Olympic medallist, Azizulhasni Awang, as his idol.
